Chapter 9

Vera Clayton:

The beeping sound of a machine slowly trickled into my subconscious. I tried ignoring it as I feared what my eyes would meet once it opened

But the sound was persistent. In the end, I fluttered my eyes open and the number of flowers that met my sight caused a frown to settle on my face.

Was this what the afterlife looked like? A land of flowers?

It was a bath of natural colors that somehow blended to create a beautiful mix.

My eyes turned and I saw a piece of cardboard that read, ‘I am sorry. I frowned.

The moon goddess never apologized to wolves her games had maltreated–except if I was the first.

But that delusion soon came to an end as my eyes finally landed on the machine producing the beeping sounds.

They were connected to my right arm and the ceiling above me was another clear indication that I wasn’t dead yet.

I was in a hospital.

Someone had somehow managed to hold on to me in this sickening realm.

Anger and hot tears filled my eyes as I sat up briskly glaring at the flowers. Now that I have figured out that I was alive, only one person came to mind who would do this.

Blaise  Vermont.

And just like they said, think of the devil and he would appear. Not long after my realization, the door opened and there he was staring down at me with sad eyes.

My wolf shifted within me and I quickly turned my back to him refusing to be driven by my emotions.

“Vera, I am so sorry. Please forgive me…” He whispered as he came to kneel by the hospital bed but I refused to look directly at him.

“I don’t know what came over me. I there is no explanation, it was just foolishness and fear.”

My head snapped to his face as the last word sank into me.

You feel fear?”

His hands took hold of mine and he nodded. ‘I fear that I will lose you. I fear that my love for you will-

“Lies.” I hissed, slapping his hands off. “If you really seek forgiveness then you should start with the truth. Why…” I whispered my voice betraying me as it cracked.

“Why would you bring me here if you didn’t want me?” The tears filled my eyes and I felt my heart swell as emotions began to overwhelm me.

“Why did you bring me to the hospital and save me, if you don’t want me?” My voice was shaking but I was determined to let it all out. “Is it my scars? Do they disgust you? Is it because I am not pure and clean for you?”

His eyes reddened as he squeezed my hands tight and began to shower them with kisses

“No, Vera. Don’t say that.” He whispered. “You are perfect for me. You are everything I have ever wanted. The scars and everything you think makes you imperfect are the very things that make me fall for you….

My wolf howled softly. She was already buying into his confession but my brain refused it.

My eyes settled on my wrists and I noticed the scar was barely there but still noticeable.

I was usually very strong and tolerant of pain but I decided to take my own life because I couldn’t live knowing that my mate didn’t want me. I broke and if Blaise wanted to fix me, it was going to take more than an attraction from my  –starved wolf.

“I love you, Vera. I want you and I mean every single word in that…”

“Love wouldn’t be enough Blaise. How do I know you wouldn’t just send me out the door the second you tire of me?”

His eyes flashed and I could feel the energy coming off of him.

That will never happen Vera. I’ll die first before I let that happen.”

I became confused.

He looked sincere. He sounded sincere. In fact, it was almost like Blaise was two different people. The one, that ignored me and treated me badly and this one, were two different people. This was the Blaise who saved me. This was the Blaise who had claimed me.

I was still battling with the decision to make when he placed his hands into his pocket and stared deeply into my eyes.

“I was going to wait till you got better but since the conversation came up now. I want to let it out…”

My heart skipped a beat as I watched him produce the ring box.

“Vera Clayton, will you do me the honors of being my Luna? To rule by my side till we get old?”

I was shocked but I was also thrilled. My wolf took over the control of my body and she extended our hand to Blaise before I could stop her.

Yes.

I will be your Luna,” she said and I couldn’t take the words back.

As the ring slipped onto my finger, my heart drummed with excitement. Being a gamma with no skill, this was a position I could have only dreamed about. But was it the right thing to do?

‘He is our mate. He will protect us, Aiya whispered in my head still I couldn’t just blindly trust Blaise.

But seeing the excited grin in his eyes, I couldn’t bring myself to correct Aiya’s mistake.

Thank you, Vera. I promise to make you the happiest female in the realm” He whispered as he showered kisses onto my fingers and over the ring

All the doubts 1–had washed away in the days that followed because Blaise didn’t just say it, he did it too

He stayed by my side through my stay in the hospital and when I was finally released, he dotted over me like I was the most precious thing in the world.

Laleh immediately began the preparations for the ceremony, just like Blaise had promised.

Everyone was happy and I promised never to try taking my own life again.

A few weeks into the planning, I descended the large stairs in search of Laleh. We were supposed to go into town to check

the venue she had chosen but so far I haven’t seen her.

As I got to the bottom of the stairs, I stopped one of the maids.

“Excuse me, have you seen Laleh around?”

She pointed a finger down a corridor and bowed her head. “She is down in the kitchen, my lady”

THE

A smile set on my lips at the respect she accorded me and I waited till she was gone before I went in the direction she had shown me.

I could already hear the shattering coming from the kitchen and I knew I wasn’t so far off but just before I could take another step forward, a door suddenly opened in front of me -almost knocking into me.

It was Emily. The strange girl.

Cold air brushed past me as our eyes met but I tried to push the uneasiness away with my smile

“Hello, Emily. How are you?” I said; hoping to sound in control and I would say I did a pretty decent job.

But Emily didn’t return my smile. Her face remained straight as she just stood there and stared at me.

I remembered when Laleh had asked me to pay her no attention and seeing that she wasn’t responsive, I wanted to walk on to my destination but her words stopped me,

You are making a mistake. Do not become the Luna. It will only bring you pain…”
