ELLA

I’ve been back at the Academy for a day and a half, and I’ve started to notice some odd things taking place around the campus. The town seems to be emptier somehow, of late. Shops and sidewalks are nowhere as crowded as when I left to visit Devon. Even our local hang out spot, the Corner Coffee Shop, doesn’t seem as busy as Friday’s, typically tend to be. Noticeably, some faculty and students seem to be missing.

January 3rd and classes are back in session. In an academy that houses nearly three hundred people, the campus grounds heck even the hallways are most lacking the student body and faculty. I walk into my first class of the new semester and spot Ms. Harris standing in between her desk and the blackboard. “Hey Ella, how have your first few days back on campus been?”

“Uh, well... Since you ask, does it seem, I don’t know, quiet around here? Where is everybody.”

Ms. H. leans against her desk, her strawberry blond hair is pulled back into her infamous ponytail that always reminded me and Ali of a cheerleader. She crosses her arms over her chest causing creases to form in her white cotton button down shirt which is tucked into a long black pencil skirt. Her skirt falls just above her ankles, and I watch as she crosses her legs at the ankle as she listens to what I was saying.

“Yes, both Mr. Hopkins and I were just talking about that exact thing last evening.”

“Should we bring this issue up to the Association? I mean seriously, why hasn’t this been addressed to the public yet?” Unfortunately, Ms. H. doesn’t get a chance to respond as a few more students walk in and then the tardy trills seconds after.

With a sigh I take out the items I will for the class from my satchel and try to keep my attention on her lesson instead of all the thoughts whirling through my head.

Shortly after lunch an announcement went out over the loudspeakers saying that all classes have been cancelled until further notice, making me wonder as to whether Ms. Harris took my suggestion to heart and did indeed have a chat with the Association...

We are all currently holed up at the Hopkins’ mansion, taking refuge so to speak and trying to figure out what is going on in our town.

Mr. and Mrs. Hopkins split up shortly after Alina’s death and James booted Beth to the curb. Now he, along with Ms. Harris, a few other teachers and a handful of students have formed a front of sorts. We, in groups of twos and threes, go out randomly throughout the town looking for any who might not have yet been affected by whatever is happening.

The goings-on have been kept fairly low key until yesterday when Rifqa (a student I’ve been rooming with), and I went out on a scouting mission. We’ve all been wearing black a lot lately as we do patrols throughout the town, so as to blend in with our surroundings, which we are most thankful for as we were walking some of the back alleyways and we happened to stumble upon Beth and some guy we have never seen before. “Who is Mrs. Hopkins talking to?” Rifqa whispered close to my ear.

I shrugged my shoulders and then hushed her, so we could see if we could hear what they were saying. As I look over her, I barely recognize Beth now. Her once immaculate, well-manicured appearance has gone to the wayside. In its place, a messy bun, sweatshirt and torn jeans. I would really like to take a picture of her and send it to Alina, but I don’t want to draw attention to our hiding spot. We are crouched down behind a dumpster and both witness Beth stroke the side of the stranger’s face almost adoringly.

“Now that we have an army, why are we not taking over the mansion? Let’s storm the place head on and then we can plan our attack against the Silver-Heart Coven!”

“Patiencesssss dear. We will stick to what we had firsssst discussssed.”

“But Cal!” Beth whined. Yes, whined to the male figure.

“Ssshhh, continue your collecting and meet back at the Grand Hall.”

We watch as Beth nods her head and turns away from him. “Shit!” I curse quietly as we realize that Beth is headed in our direction. Scrambling, we back ourselves up against the brick wall, never more thankful that we are wearing the dark clothing and hold our breaths as she passes by. As soon as she is out of sight, we look back around the dumpster to make sure the Cal stranger has gone as well and then standing up, we run as fast as we could back to Mr. Hopkins’ home.

Barging through the front doors, not knowing if they shut behind us of their own accord or if they stood wide open Rifqa and I shout out as we rush into the center of the house; “James! Natalie! Where is everyone? We’ve just heard some very unsettling news!”

“Girls? What’s wrong? What’s going on?” We hear Natalie ask as she comes barreling through from the kitchen.

A moment later James can be heard as he quickly makes his way down from somewhere upstairs. “What’s happened? Are you guys, okay?” He looks frantically at Rifqa and then me, taking our appearances in to make sure we ourselves have not been harmed.

“No, no. We’re fine,” Rifqa spoke quickly, “but we have just heard some disturbing news.”

“Yeah, one, Mrs. Hopkins is in cahoots with an odd character whom I’ve never seen around before ever! And two, they are building an army and are planning on attacking the mansion!”

Nodding his head, James looks to all of us gathered in his living room and tells us we must all prepare for the attack. I question him once he is done speaking about calling Domonic and see if we can recruit their help as well.

After he consents, I rush up to Ali’s old bedroom and call her instead. It’s crazy but I haven’t even had a chance to tell Mr. Hopkins that is daughter is walking amongst us once more.

“Ali? Can you hear me?” I shouted into my cell phone. A very weird noise has started to grow outside and is slowly starting to filter into the house, making it hard to be able to hear anything. “Ali, if you can hear me, gather everyone you can from your community and get to the Academy. We need your…” my phone dies before I can finish asking for help. Suddenly the power went out, leaving us in complete and utter darkness...
