Chapter 85

“Why was I…what?” I asked.

“Why were you saying Bob’s name in your sleep?” Andrew repeated slowly.

I blinked. Suddenly, the color escaped from my face.

I knew that I had screamed for Bob in my dream, had begged him to stop, but I didn’t know. that the words had left my mouth in real life. How was I supposed to explain this to him?

Andrew had taken it well enough when I had explained the investigation to him, but I doubted that the same would happen if I tried to tell him that Bob had attacked and threatened me. I might have had Jeffrey’s word to back me up, but Bob had Lisa wrapped around his finger, and with Andrew and Lisa’s relationship already on thin ice because of me, I couldn’t take the chance of making that ice even thinner.

“I.I don’t know…”

“How can you not know?”

“I just don’t, okay?”

I moved

my face away from him. I probably should have just told him that I was having a hard time remembering the dream, but I wasn’t thinking straight. This whole situation was making my stomach ache and my heart flutter.

Andrew’s brow furrowed, and his jaw set.

“Was it a S** dream?”

My eyes widened.

“What? No, of course not-”

“Then why else would you be saying his name in your sleep?”

My heart and head pounded. I tried to pull my wrists out of his hands, but his grip was strong. When he saw that I was starting to panic, he released his hold and rolled off of me, onto his back.

“It’s a simple question, Crystal,” he said, his voice low. “Answer it.”

“I told you, I don’t know.”

I turned onto my side to face him. I could barely make him out in the darkness, but what I could see of him concerned me

His entire b*dy was tense. He curled his hand into a fist on top of his chest. He refused to look in my direction.

Chapter 85

“Get out.”

My b*dy went numb. This was my first official night with Andrew; it couldn’t end with him kicking me out, not over this.

“Andrew, please listen…”

“Get out, Crystal Now.”

My lower l*p trembled. I grabbed Andrew’s forearm. When he tried to rip it away, I tightened. my hold..

“Please, don’t throw me out-

“I don’t want to hear it, Crystal. If you can’t even answer this one question for me, then I obviously can’t trust you.”

“Yes, you can.”

“Prove it!”

“I’m trying, but you don’t understand-

“What don’t I understand? You were having a S** dream about your ex, and you can’t even be honest about it with me!”

My b*dy shook. My fingers dug deeply into his arm. The idea of having a S** dream about Bob made me want to wretch, and the thought that Andrew, of all people, thought that I would have one and lie to him about it was too much for me to bear.

My voice cracked as I spoke. It was all I could do to get the words to come out of my mouth

“I promise, it wasn’t a S** dream. Far from it. It wasn’t even a pleasant dream.”

He didn’t respond. I wasn’t sure what else I could say to make him believe me.

“You had to have known that from the way I was flailing. Would it really be something pleasant–anything even remotely like S**–if I were lashing out enough for you to have to restrain me like you did?”

Andrew still didn’t respond for a couple moments. Then he directed his dark gaze at me. My insides clenched at the sight.

Tell me what the dream was about.”

“I told you, it was like the other dream, the one that I called you about.”

Why was Bob in it?”

eleased Andrew’s arm and turned away from him. Sitting up in the bed, I pulled my legs to

my

chest and settled my chin between my knees. I stared off into the darkened room, trying not to let the image of Bob with the knife overwhelm my senses

“I can’t tell you that,” I mumbled. “It’s too personal.”

I felt Andrew sit up beside me. He wrapped his arms around my shoulders and brought me into his chest. I inhaled his scent of Labdanum and sea salt, deciding to cherish it for as long as he would let me linger in it.

“Did he hurt you?” he asked me. “When you two were together?”

I shook my head. That much, at least, was true. Bob never hurt me while we were together.

“After?‘

Twenty seconds passed without an answer. Thirty. A minute.

Andrew let five minutes of silence–maybe more, I couldn’t quite tell–to pass between us without me giving him an answer. Maybe that was all the answer that he needed. Maybe he was just not going to push me any further than he already had.

Either way, I was not going to voluntarily tell him what Bob had done. Not yet.

“Do you want to tell me about the rest of the dream?” he asked when the silence grew uncomfortable.

I wasn’t sure what to tell him. He could possibly figure out Bob’s role in the dream if I told him the rest of it, but if I didn’t tell him anything, then it might ruin the trust that we had. built. I didn’t want to destroy that for either of us

“Vampires attacked me again,” I said reluctantly. “It was so painful, just like the first time.”

Andrew lifted his hand, stopped, then proceeded to stroke my hair.

“Anything else?”

I hesitated before shaking my head.

“It’s too personal.”

“Are you sure?”

I nodded.

I felt his hand pause in its movement. I froze, worried that he would start arguing with me again, but he soon resumed his soothing strokes.

Do you want to talk about the vampires?”

hit my l*p as I felt it trembling again.

Chapter 85

“Are you sure that you don’t want me to leave?” I asked.

He sighed.

“No. I know that you have some things that you can’t tell me yet. I just wished that you safe enough with me to trust me with this information.”

“Me too.”

felt

Andrew stiffened. Sometimes, the truth hurt, but I hadn’t intended on hurting him like that.

“How about I go make us some tea? We can stay up and talk about the vampires in your dream. I’ll be right back.”

Before I could respond, he let go of me and slid off the bed.

Andrew, wait, I said. “Come back!”

He continued out the door and down the hall towards the kitchen. After a few minutes of calling out for him, I gave up, knowing that the mansion was too big for me catch up to him and bring him back to the far–too–empty bed.

Instead, I sat on the bed and waited. I closed my eyes, trying to ignore the shadows as they closed in on me. Yet even behind my eyes, all I could see were flashes of Bob, Louise, and Gregory encircling me, coming to finish the job.
