Chapter 59

Several of the vampires hissed at Andrew, but Frederick laughed.

“The Alpha King? It seems you were right, Gregory,” he said, straddling me. “We do have a very special mutt here.”

Frederick grabbed the back of my head and lunged for my n*eck. I screamed in pain as his fangs pierced my skin. I trembled and kicked, becoming weaker with every passing moment, as he noisily slurped up my blood.

I heard a low, rumbling growl as it shook the ground, more terrifying and Earth-shattering than any werewolf growl I had ever heard. Vampiric shrieks soon filled the air.

Frederick released me. When I turned my head, I saw two giant wolves chasing and ripping apart vampires. Many chose to stay and fight, losing their heads in the process, but Louise and Gregory fled without so much as a second glance back at the chaos behind them.

With Frederick distracted by the sla ughter, I took my chance to escape. I tried to crawl away, but Frederick seized the back of my dress and dragged me to him.

“Not so fast,” he muttered in my ear. “You could still be useful.”

He wrapped his arm around my waist and started to drag me behind the trees. I stiffened and dug the heels of my feet into the dirt.

No, I thought. This will not happen again.

Using my waning strength, I formed my tied hands into fists and smashed them against Frederick’s mouth. This wouldn’t hurt him, but it might distract him long enough for me to get away.

“You bi tch!” Frederick exclaimed as he instinctually released me to check his fangs.

I stumbled away as fast as I could. Knowing that I wouldn’t make it far with my blood loss, I called out for Andrew.

“Andrew!”

An enormous black wolf, blood matting the front of his fur, charged through the trees. He was followed by a slightly smaller, but still large, brown wolf. The black wolf eyed me, as though assessing my injuries, before turning his attention to Frederick.

Frederick tried to run, but the wolves pounced on him before he could escape. I could not get myself to look away as the brown wolf pinned Frederick down and the black wolf took the vampire’s head in his mouth, tearing it from his n*eck in one swift movement. I did not know that vampires bled red like the rest of us.

The pain and blood loss finally caught up to me as the adrenaline of the fight died down. I grew dizzy, and I collapsed onto the ground.

“Crystal” Andrew’s voice called.

When had he transformed back into his human form?

A n*ked Andrew and Jeffrey stood over me, though I could barely recognize them through my blurring sight. Sweat dripped. down my b*dy as chills raised from every inch of my skin. My heart rate was slowing, and I struggled to breathe.

“Crystal, are you okay?”

“Your Highness, look,” I heard Jeffrey say. “She’s been bitten, twice. I’m surprised that she’s been able to stand this long.”

“Don’t

n’t worry, Crystal,” Andrew said. “We’re going to get you some antivenom. You’re going to be okay.”

I felt someone lift me up and start to carry me before everything went black.

but I was

I awoke in a hospital bed. My head throbbed terribly, my throat was incredibly dry, and I was sore all over, otherwise fine. I looked around and was surprised to find Andrew sitting in a nearby chair, staring directly at me.

He smiled slightly, but I could see the concern behind it.

“Hello, Crystal,” he said, his voice sounding rough from a lack of sleep.

I tried to return the greeting, but my throat was too dry. Sensing my discomfort, Andrew poured me some ice water from a pitcher beside my bed and handed me the glass with a straw,

“Small sips,” he told me, like any good nurse would.

I obeyed his command and took small sips of the water. The water felt so good on my aching throat that I wanted to ch ug it all, but I didn’t know how my stomach would feel after the whole ordeal, so I made myself stick to the small sips. When I was done, I put the glass back on the bedside table

“Thank you,” I said. “What happened? How long have I been out?”

“How long have you been out? A day.”

“A day?” I asked, shocked.

“Well, your b*dy did have to combat vampiric venom. That takes time, even with the antivenom.”

I nodded, still a bit dazed by the realization.

“Right.”

“As far as what happened, I think that you’re going to have to answer that one for me. Jeffrey has given me his version of the events-” he nodded his head to the far corner, where Jeffrey had hidden himself like a ghost- “but I would like to know from you what happened.”

I took a shuddering breath. My b*dy shook as I tried to keep myself together long enough to recall what had happened the day before.

“Someone followed me home and kidnapped me, three guys. It happened so fast, but I remember them threatening to shoot me if someone didn’t back off, so I guess that was Jeffrey. Then they left me stranded in the middle of those woods.”

Andrew’s brow furrowed, and his expression darkened. I could tell that he was trying to suppress his anger.

“Did they say anything?”

“Nothing useful. One wished me luck, so I think that they knew that I would be attacked eventually. It was only a matter of

time.”

I stared down at my hands, which seemed to have healed from where my nails had cut me and where the ropes had dug into my skin. There were some benefits to being part-werewolf

“Why does this keep happening to me?” I asked, even though I knew exactly who was responsible for my misfortune,

Bob

He was the only one who could have orchestrated something like this. He was the only one who would want me dead badly enough to do something this cruel. I wasn’t sure if Lisa was involved or not, but I knew for certain that Bob was behind this.

If only I could just tell Andrew the truth, then this would all be over, but it was still my word against the word of his future son-in-law. No matter what his feelings for me seemed to be, there was no way that he would take the word of an ex-con over the man whom he was letting marry his precious daughter.

“Crystal.” Andrew said, his tone gentle but firm, “do you think you would be able to identify your kidnappers?”

I closed my eyes. The image of those three men was burned into mind. Maybe if I identified them, they would sell Bob out to Andrew, and it would no longer be me against Bob.

After all, who would want to defend someone like Bob against the Alpha King?

I opened my eyes.

“Yes,” I said in the firmest voice that I could manage.

“Good.” Andrew said. “I swear, I will help you find these creeps and bring them to justice. You won’t need to be scared anymore.”

I smiled, but tears streamed down my cheeks.

“Thank you,” I said as I wiped the tears away from my eyes.

Andrew looked away and cleared his throat.

“I’m going to go look for the doctor. They said that as soon as you woke up and passed their medical exam that you could go home.”

He turned back to me and stared me straight in the eye.

“I must insist that you at least spend the night at my mansion. You’ll be safer there.”

Even though I knew that Bob and Lisa would be there, I nodded. I didn’t want to be alone.

“Thank you,” I said. “I would really appreciate that.”
