Chapter 36

Nora POV

Blake’s entrance had stopped the ceremony dead. Jeremy and I weren’t getting married, and once that was obvious, the rest of the pack had dispersed. I excitedly went back to my room to get out of the annoying wedding dress and fancy jewelry.

Once Blake had declared that I was his wife and I had agreed, no one else dared to stand up and argue against him. He was still the Lycan King, Jeremy wouldn’t go to war with the Lycan King for me, and I was grateful for that. I didn’t want him to fight for me.

I stipped down and left those fine things in a pile on the floor, throwing on some casual, comfortable clothing. As pretty as the dress was, all that extra fluff had been itchy and scratchy on my skin.

Didn’t even wait for the maids to help me out. I threw all of it in a heap on the floor and pulled a bag out to pack the things I wanted to take with me when Blake and I left. There wasn’t much and it only took me minutes to pack.

Sighing, I looked around the familiar room. I no longer felt the sadness or sentimentality around this room. For months, I’d just wanted to get back here and now I couldn’t wait to leave.

I’d made up my mind, though. I was leaving with Blake.

I’d been so excited to get out of those clothes, I hadn’t shut my bedroom door while packing.

The hairs on my n*eck stood up and I looked at the doorway where I felt someone watching me. Jeremy was standing there.

He was looking down at his feet, his face somber. He sighed heavily and then knocked on the doorframe, hesitantly.

“Jeremy, what’s up?” I asked.

He sighed again and lifted his head, meeting my eyes. His face was haggard, eyes sunken slightly. He looked exhausted!

“I think we should talk. If you’re leaving this could be our last chance,” he suggested.

I looked at my half-packed bag. There wasn’t anything I had to say to Jeremy but I didn’t want to leave things on horrible terms. For the sake of our friendship, I wanted us to remain amicable.

He was still someone I’d known my whole life. Besides, if I left on bad terms, it would cause problems for Blake and Jeremy in the future. I wanted the two of them to be able to get along, for political reasons. Even though I was leaving Moonery for good, they were still my pack and I didn’t want them to be in conflict with the Lycan King, especially not because of me.

“Okay, sure,” I said, nodding. I zipped up my bag and carried it to the bedroom door. “What did you want to talk about?”

“Will you come out with me? I want to go somewhere a little more private,” Jeremy suggested.

I bit the inside of my l*p. That seemed a little dangerous, especially if Blake found out. I’d just taken big steps toward repairing things with Blake. He’d probably have a lot to say to me about taking off without a word, but for now, I didn’t want to stir the pot anymore.

“Where did you want to go?” I asked, crossing my arms.

“Just for a walk,” he said. “I promise.”

I nodded and followed Jeremy outside. We walked through the gardens in silence and to the edge of a lake we’d used to play

near when we were kids.

“Jeremy, why are we here?” I asked, looking out at the glassy surface of the lake. The moon was bright, reflecting off the

surface.

“Don’t you know?” he asked.

The you feel something between us that day?” Jeremy pressed.

Shrugging. I got to my feet and theed him. “Jeremy, we were kids then. The mate bond doesn’t come out until we’re

now, ist we were always such good friends. I felt like we were destined to be mates from the start. When Helen stole that bond, I couldn’t feel the love for you I was meant to have,” he explained. His face softened slightly,

You know, I do know what Helen’s mischiet did. She stole my wolf, remember?” I asked. I kept as much attitude out of my voices posible.

We were having an honest conversation, one that would probably be our last. I didn’t want it to turn out badly.

Sitter was injured, I felt differently toward Helen. It wasn’t until we made it back here that I knew I loved you. The feelings from our mate bond were completely restored. You didn’t feel that, though, did you?” he asked.

I shook my head. “I’m sorry, Jeremy, but I didn’t. What Helen stole from me… she never stole my feelings for you. I fell out cal love with you naturally. Just because your mate bond was turned back on doesn’t mean mine was,” 1 explained.

Jeremy sighed and nodded.

Something rustled in the bushes and 1 looked up.

Jeremy stepped in front of me protectively.

“Who’s there!?” he called out.

Blake appeared from the bushes and scanned the midnight scene by the lake. He arched an eyebrow at me.

shrugged.

Ignoring Jeremy, for the moment, Blake strode smoothly over and wrapped his arms around me. He pulled me against him. embracing me fully

Ny skim warmed and I instinctively hugged him back. I bit my l*p to keep my uncontrolled smile from spreading.

“What are you doing out here with my wife?” Blake asked, turning his attention to Jeremy.

“Blake, we were just saying goodbye,” I said, patting his chest.

Blake shook his head. “I don’t believe it. I want to hear it from him, along with his true intentions.”

Again, I wasn’t sure if Blake was being serious or if he was acting again, putting on a show.

“His like Nora said, we were just saying goodbye,” Jeremy insisted.

Blake growled low in his throat. He released me and went over to Jeremy, standing toe-to-toe.

You brought my wife to a romantic lake setting at night to say goodbye?” he asked, setting his hands on his hips.

Jeremy swallowed audibly and licked his l*ps a few times.

I imagined it was not a fun place to be, thinking he’d crossed the Lycan King more than once.

What are your true motives? Were you trying to seduce her back to you? Were you trying to get her to stay with you out of sentimentality?” Blake asked firmly.

“N-no” Jeremy said, shaking his head. He didn’t sound so sure of himself.

Jeremy?” I asked.

Had Blake just discovered the truth?

I thought Jeremy was respecting my decision to leave and stay with Blake, but it sounded like Jeremy had ulterior motives.

“That’s not what I was doing. I just wanted you to remember that we had good memories together,” Jeremy defended himself.

“Oh, really? You think that if you remind her of enough memories, you had as kids, her love for you will magically come back?” Blake asked sharply. “We’ve been through this already.”

“No. I wanted us to be on good terms when she left,” Jeremy insisted.

You were the one that put the two of you on bad terms,” Blake said, pointing to Jeremy.

Jeremy swatted Blake’s hand out of the way. “I’m not the one that keeps getting in my face!”

Blake laughed and shook his head. “You really have no respect for your king. One day, that is going to come back to haunt you. Hopefully, at that time, your only advocate will have forgiven you.” He nodded toward me.

“Is that a threat?” Jeremy asked.

“No. I’m a reasonable man and I can understand you’re feeling a little hurt from losing such an amazing woman. I’ll let your insubordination slide because of your personal loss,” Blake said, smirking.

Jeremy snorted. He glared at Blake, then looked at me.

“I don’t know what Nora sees in you. You’re nothing but a bully,” Jeremy hissed.
