Chapter 7 He Wants the Child

The desire within him was taking over his mind, and he couldn’t care less about the consequences of his actions. All he wanted was her.

Celia panicked when she felt him pulling her into his embrace. “No, please. I beg you. Let me go.”

“You do not have the right to refuse.” He stood up and held the back of her head, then he pressed his lips against hers.

Celia was almost crying from fear. Hugo wasn’t the gentlest man, to begin with, and she could never take him when he was almost out of his mind. The scent of alcohol coming from him heightened her fear. He came back drunk? She had no idea his drink was spiked. “You b*stard!”

Hugo stopped her from saying more.

Is he mad? Is this how he’s going to kill the baby? A despairing thought filled Celia’s head. She was already unable to fight him off in usual times, and now with his mind gone, she had no hope of defending herself. She cried and cried, but no matter what she did, she couldn’t stop the tragedy from happening. She was like a flower in the storm, but there was nothing she could do to prevent herself from getting ravaged.

Hugo kept going on no matter how much she cried. A long, long time later, a scream cut through the air. Celia felt something warm coming from her lower body, but she was almost unconscious by then.

The sight of the crimson liquid hammered Hugo’s heart, and he regained his mind. He stared at the blood in his hand, disbelief filling his eyes, and he cursed himself deafeningly in his mind. What was I doing? He exhaled loudly and quickly called the hospital.

“I need an ambulance right now! My place! Right away!” he roared.

His private hospital was just nearby so it didn’t even take ten minutes for the ambulance to show up. Hugo tossed his phone away and called out to Celia loudly, his mind blank. For the first time, sheer panic took over his heart, and he looked around, but the only thing greeting him was a big crimson patch.

He wanted to do something, anything, but he couldn’t. All he could do was crouch and pat her cheek. “Look, don’t sleep. The ambulance is coming soon. Wake up. Wake up! Don’t sleep!”

Celia was white as a ghost, as if all life within her had been extinguished, but the blood wouldn’t stop flowing. He put his hand on her belly and felt the baby moving around, struggling to live. Tears welled up in his eyes. For the first time in his life, he thought he deserved hell. What was I doing?

When he heard the sirens of the ambulance, he quickly picked Celia up and rushed out of the door. The medical staff was shocked to see the state Celia was in, and they quickly took her into the ambulance.

The doctor quickly administered emergency protocols. No one asked what happened before this. They noticed Hugo’s messy clothes, so they could guess what must have happened.

Celia was taken to the emergency room right away. Hugo stood outside, staring at the door. He then looked at his hands. They were covered in blood, as if he was a murderer. Hugo was panting and he closed his eyes. He had half the mind to hang himself.

Ten minutes later, a loud cry cut through the air. The cry that signaled new life jolted him. He stood up. The baby’s alive?

A nurse came out with the baby covered in a towel and said, “Congratulations, Mr. Spencer. It’s a boy. Miss Stuart is still undergoing surgery. She had a case of serious bleeding, and we’re sewing her wounds right now.”

Just then, the baby started crying again. Hugo looked at the little one and felt something stir in his heart. His mind was blank for a moment. That’s my child?

The nurse said, “I need to take the child to the ward, Mr. Spencer.”

Hugo looked at the emergency room, worry flaring in his eyes. You cannot die, Celia. You are not dying without my permission. Half an hour went by. He had never been this tormented except during the time his mother disappeared. Every second was filled with the thought that he might lose her. He had no idea why he wanted her to live, but at the same time, he didn’t want to let her go. It was conflicting.

Eventually, a tired doctor came out of the room, but he perked up when he saw Hugo. “Don’t worry, Mr. Spencer. She is all right.”

Hugo heaved a long sigh of relief. He had been holding his breath for a while now, and he eased up. “Thank you.”

The nurses pushed Celia out of the room. She was covered in a blanket, and her hair spread out behind her. She was as pale as a porcelain doll. His heart hurt, and he wanted to follow the nurses to the ward.

The doctor said, “Mr. Spencer, you should let her rest. She’s still under anesthesia, and she shouldn’t be agitated.”

Hugo nodded, and the doctor smiled. “But you can see your son.”

Hugo saw Celia off as the medical staff left with her. He closed his eyes, his heart calming down. If he had been one step too late, Celia and the child could’ve died. He would have lost both of them, and the thought of that filled him with guilt. He clenched his fists and approached the observation room.

The little one was lying in the incubator, asleep. It was as small as a ball, and its fists were clenched. Its hair was dark, and its face was beautiful.

“The child looks like you, Mr. Spencer.” The nurse smiled.

Hugo saw it. The child did look like him, and a magical feeling swelled in his heart.

The nurse opened up the incubator to change the baby’s diapers, and Hugo extended his index finger. The moment he touched the baby’s hand, the baby held it. The hand was small, but there was power behind it. It squeezed Hugo’s heart, and he felt delight filling his soul.

The blood of my family courses through his veins. He left the observation room and went to Celia’s ward. She was still unconscious, and the light that shone on her only made her look cold and lifeless. The surgery took so much out of her, she couldn’t even move a finger.

Hugo stared at her for a long, long time, and he came to a decision. Then he left. I will not let her or her family into the life of my son.
