Chapter 19

Everything was so freaking surreal.

Amber released a soft sigh, shoving the last of her clothing into her bag.

She’d woken with an unusual daze on the couch. At first, she hadn’t known how she’d gotten there, but then as she came to, she began to remember bits and pieces of what had occurred. She’d risen and gone in search of Callum, only to be hit with another surprise.

Callum and George were together, and they were being civil to each other. The truth was, she’d initially walked into the office braced for war, so when she found the both of them talking amicably, without a gun in sight, she had seen it as an omen that positive things were yet to come. It was like a ray of sunshine finally breaking through intense clouds. She would finally be able to ask the questions she’d always wanted answers to and learn things about herself she’d always wanted to

know.

She’d gotten a few snippets of knowledge, learning her father was a werewolf and that he’d abandoned her mother early in her pregnancy. It had seemed like things were taking an upswing when she settled into the chair in her stepfather’s office, the men getting along famously, providing her their undivided attention. Then, out of the blue, Jade had shown up.

When she’d stormed inside the office and saw Amber sitting beside an enormous werewolf whose hand rested possessively on her thigh, a look of betrayal and discomfort had flashed across her face, and Amber couldn’t blame her. She knew how bad it looked.

Amber had called Jade in a panic the night before, unable to tell her anything concrete she’d told her friend to find Callum Ford if she didn’t hear from her in twenty-four hours. Knowing Jade, Amber knew she’d probably gone into a panic. So she understands why Jade carried that look. Amber was safe, unharmed, and at home, and she hadn’t called her. Amber knew that If she wanted to salvage the one friendship she’d relied on her entire life, she was going to have to do some sucking up.

Too bad Jadr wasn’t in a forgiving mood.

As soon as they’d made it to Amber’s room Jade let it fly. Amber listened as her friend vented, knowing Jade needed an outlet. When she learned Jade had journeyed to Ink Stone looking for her.

Jade didn’t like things she couldn’t understand-especially things that could shift forms and kill people. It was the only fundamental thing they didn’t have in common. Aber didn’t say a word as she finished packing her things, aware she couldn’t avoid the confrontation.

“You should have called me or at least answered your phone, Jade repeated for the hundredth time, her voice heated. Twent looking for you! 1 could have become a wolf snack.

“I didn’t have a chance,” she finally said, zipping her bag closed. “I planned on calling you as soon as I got home.”

“Your new boyfriend wouldn’t have anything to do with the loss of brain cells, would he?” Jade snapped. “You couldn’t yourself away from him for two minutes to tell me you were okay? Don’t you think I deserved that much? You said you were in deep s hit, Amber! I was scared to death.”

“Believe it or not, I wasn’t thinking about you at the time.” She knew it sounded harsh, but she and Jade had always been honest with each other. “I wanted you to tell Creta and George I was okay, so they wouldn’t worry. In case it slipped your notice. I’m dealing with some crazy s hit right now

“Believe me, I noticed. It’s kind of impossible nat to when you bring a werewolf home. What are you thinking? You know how dangerous they are Jade lowered her voice. Anger marred the beauty of her face. “He could hurt you and your family. You’ve seen the news. You know what they’re capable of”

“Yes, I’ve seen the news.” She whipped around, facing Jade. “News that’s brought to the public by humans, with human interests, who don’t trust the paranormal things they discriminate against. Yes, there are some supernatural being out there that are dangerous, like the vampire that attacked me and Joseph”

Jade gasped as she cut Amber short. “Wait, a vampire attacked you? And you went with Joseph? Joseph and not me?

Amber couldn’t help but sigh. “Yes, and yes. Jade you know there was no way you were going to agree to come with me.”

“Dam n right! 1 wouldn’t have approved and I was going to make d amn sure you didn’t go either. No sane friend would encourage her friend to go to her death.”

Amber’s eyes lighted. “You don’t know him, Jade. Callum will never hurt us”

“You don’t know him either,” Jade retorted. “You just met the guy.”

“You’re wrong.

Jade wasn’t aware of her dreams. There was a part of Amber that knew Callum better than she knew anyone else. The connection between them was so strong she knew precisely where he was in the house-exactly where she’d left him at the foot of the stairs-as though she could feel him somehow. She was anxious to leave the room and return to him, craving his scent and closeness. He replaced anxiety with calm, eradicating the doubts that plagued her.

Jade plopped her hands on her slim hips. “One night with a werewolf and you’ve decided to go to bat for the other team? Is

that it?”

I am on the other team.

What Callum had told her was true. The mark on her neck wasn’t a coincidence. Her father had pa**ed his genes-his werewolf genes-to her. Like a key opening a lock to the unknown, her future and what it held now seemed limitless. There was no room for fear, only acceptance and a small spark of excitement. There was so much she would now be able to do, so many things she’d be able to learn. And she’d learn them with a s exy-a s-s in man who set her blood on fire.

Da mn it to hell.

Why did she have to start thinking about him now? That simple thought made her skin pric kle, with heat, anticipation pumping through her system. The night before had been an appetizer. She wanted to touch him, tease him and taste him. There were no limits. Callum wasn’t a blushing violet. He wanted her open, honest, and raw. There wouldn’t be any secrets, only two people exploring everything together.

For a moment she imagined his fingers darting over her throat, her flesh tingling at the remembrance of his caress. Tonight, he’d touch her again. He’d expose her to his gaze, eyes combing over her in lust, and she’d let him.

And just like that, all her elation and desire turned to sadness as she met Jade’s gaze, the emotion ripping her out of her h orny daze.

How would she explain that she’d always been different? That she just hadn’t known how different until now, She took in a deep breath. “What if I told you I was meant to find Callum? She asked the question slowly, cause she knew aftempting to broach the topic with Jade was treasonous. Jade easily felt threatened by supernatural talks. “What if I said our meeting wasn’t accidental?”

“I’d say you’ve been watching too many supernatural movies and reading too many werewolf tropes. It’s either that or you’ve gone madr

S hit, Amber thought. This was going to be one hell of a talk
