Chapter Ten: A Mature Miles

Isabella was surprised by Sofia’s seriousness. She had anticipated a different response, but Sofia was ready to sacrifice profits just to retaliate against Sebastian. Isabella took a more pragmatic stance. ” Such situations are common in our field. It’s inevitable to have to interact and work with him again. Let’s not escalate it this much.” However, Sofia couldn’t bear the thought of Sebastian, his deceitful nature urging her to sever all connections with him. Isabella shifted the conversation. “Spending time with Alexander recently, I’ve noticed he’s a lot like Miles.”

Alexander’s mannerisms and even his personality closely resembled Miles, and his features looked very much like her children’s. This led Isabella to speculate if Alexander could be their father. It was a sensitive topic, and she wasn’t sure how to approach it.

Sofia hadn’t considered this before, but after Isabella pointed it out, she looked at Miles and noticed some resemblance. “We’ll find the right time to ask Alexander in the future. It’s not the right moment now, or perhaps we could arrange for him to meet the kids someday.”

Once the possibility entered her mind, Isabella couldn’t shake off her growing anxiety. ‘What if the children are his? How would I cope? And if it turns out to be true, how would I deal with the scandal erupting again? I can’t go through that nightmare once more.‘ She was so distressed during that period that she avoided her phone, not wanting to confront the relentless criticism and judgments. Her pregnancy only heightened her emotional vulnerability. The daily onslaught of online accusations, calling her unfaithful, was devastating. Nobody could understand how she got through those days. Even after relocating abroad, the painful messages and calls, some from Sebastian’s friends castigating her, continued to haunt her. Sofia was the only one who seemed to grasp her plight.

“Let’s set these worries aside for now. We’re managing well on our own. Miles and Amelia are content, even without a father, right?”

Sofia concurred, “We’ll just take things as they come.”

Early the next morning, while Sofia was getting ready for work, Alexander’s car appeared at their doorstep. Recognizing the car, she went up to knock on the window. “You’re early. Did you come just to pick up your staff?”

Alexander was known for his honesty. “Yes, I brought her home last night. Thinking it might be hard for Isabella to get to work this morning, I decided to swing by.

“That’s thoughtful of you. But I’ve always wondered, you’re such a great guy, why don’t you have a

partner yet?

Alexander briefly pursed his lips. I prefer to keep my personal life uncomplicated.” In his position, many tried to curry favor with him. Often, when he returned to his hotel room while traveling, he found women sent there for him. He had always turned them away. Rumors about his personal life didn’t bother him. He would rather stay single than be with someone he didn’t genuinely care for. He was serious about relationships.

Sofia showed her supportive nature. “If you ever develop real feelings for Isabella, let me know. I’ll back you up.

Alexander was familiar with Sofia’s straightforward nature from their past collaborations. If that day ever comes, I’ll definitely need your assistance.”

Sofia pondered Alexander’s words. ‘Is it really as I guessed? If that’s the case, it’s wonderful. No need

to worry

about any uncle–nephew relationship. Alexander is a rare find, scandal–free for years, which is more than can be said for Sebastian. She playfully winked at Alexander. I have a good feeling about you. In that case, I won’t be driving her. Be careful on the road.”

Isabella, who had just finished saying goodbye to the kids, was unaware of their conversation. “You two were talking for a while. Was it about work?”

“It’s a secret.” Sofia smiled mischievously.

Alexander chuckled lightly at her comment. “Shall we head out?” Once they were in the car, Alexander turned to Isabella. “Did you know Sebastian from before?” Their reaction upon seeing each other didn’t seem like that of strangers. Alexander suspected there was some history there. Isabella’s moment of silence conveyed the weight of her past entanglements with Sebastian. She was reluctant to dredge up old memories but recognized the need for transparency. “Yes, I was once married to him.” Alexander’s expression showed surprise. “So, the kids…“Isabella was straightforward. ” They’re not his. We used donor sperm for IVF because Sebastian is infertile.” Understanding dawned on Alexander. “That makes sense now. You’re the one who divorced him. It’s really low of him to be aware of the truth and yet spread rumors of an affair.” Isabella sighed, “Exactly. Because of this whole mess, my father hasn’t let me return home. If it weren’t for Sofia securing this job for me, probably still be stuck overseas.‘

“Don’t worry about it. We have to focus on the present, not the past.” Alexander tried to lighten the mood. “It makes sense now why Sebastian and Lorraine haven’t had kids after all these years. It was Sebastian’s issue all along.” “I was afraid you wouldn’t believe me since he’s your nephew.” Isabella felt a weight lift off her shoulders as she spoke openly. “I trust you.” Alexander looked firm. Isabella lowered her head. “He had all the IVF documents, so I couldn’t clear my name.” “You shouldn’t feel uneasy because I’m his uncle. Truth is, I hardly know him. We’re not that close.” Isabella appreciated this moment with Alexander; his trust was something she hadn’t anticipated. “That’s why Sebastian was so guarded around me, afraid I’d spill the beans to his current wife. I left him with nothing, and he was scared I’d want revenge. He even asked if I wanted anything. I asked for the villa we got when we married, but he refused.” Alexander’s frustration grew as he listened, regretting assigning Sebastian an important company project. “Now that I’m aware of this, I’m here if you need help.” He back.” paused. “My family knows about us now. If Sebastian tries to slander you again, I’ve got your Isabella grasped Alexander’s intentions, realizing their relationship was just a cover to protect each other. “I understand, boss, and I promise I won’t cross any lines.” Despite not seeking romance with Alexander, his resemblance to Miles evoked a sense of warmth and connection in her.

Together, they arrived at their workplace, where Alexander, indifferent to onlookers, politely opened the car door for her. In the elevator, he casually said, “Stop by my office later, okay?“Sure. “The elevator was Alexander’s private one, usually off–limits to everyone except for Isabella and his

assistant. This exclusivity sparked jealousy among her female colleagues. Yet, they all knew Alexander’s reputation for maintaining professional boundaries with women, leaving them no avenue to approach him. Alexander’s interest in Isabella was sincere. While he often received flirtatious overtures from female staff and even marriage proposals from women of influential families at social events, he only saw in Isabella a genuine longing for a simple, happy life. Her past, which she had bravely shared, only elevated his respect and value for her. Aware of how society often belittled women.
