Talking to the Moon

Kiara walks through the woods in a complete trans. She took over control of Moon, and Colin is following her. He has managed to hold Farrell at bay. It hasn’t been easy, but the wolf seems content as long as he pursues his mate through the woods. The moon is so bright, illuminating everything. Colin can’t remember the last time he saw a moon like this.

As they reach the lake, Kiara seems to know where she is going, and Colin hangs back, sticking to the cover of the trees, looking for any sign of danger that may be lurking. When Kiara stops and looks up to the moon, Colin keeps close to her but still holds back in the shadows watching.

“I thought you would never get here.” The woman’s voice is warm and familiar. Colin looks for the source but can’t see anyone for a few heart-stopping moments. He knows that voice, but he has never heard it before. How can he know a voice he has never heard?

She seems to step forward out of nothing but the light of the moon. Her raven hair is offset by the flowing white gown. The golden crown with a crescent moon in the center sits proudly on her head. The tips rise up to the sky like horns gleaming in the moonlight. She seems to glow, standing there in front of Moon.

“Kiara, you did well, but I need to speak to Moon as well as you. Please give her back control.” the woman says with all the love of a mother speaking to her child. Moon blinks a few times, startled to find herself standing in the woods a few feet from this woman.

“Hello, my little one. Do you know me?” the woman’s warm and musical voice is clear and bright.

“Selene,” Moon says, almost questioning her voice to work.

“Yes, and your mother.” Selene smiles warmly and reaches out to hug Moon; pulling her close, Moon is on the verge of tears again. “You have grown up so beautifully, my girl.”

“But.” Moon has a million questions but can’t seem to find the words to ask any of them. Being held in a warm embrace, her mind is a buzz of thoughts and feelings. When Selene lets her go, she looks her over one more time.

“We need to talk, and you may as well come here to Colin. I need to speak with you as well.” She looks over to the tree Colin is standing by, and he pauses, looking around, still fearing the worst.

“No one is here, I promise you that.” She assures him, so he obliges her walking into the light.

“So, you are really my mother?” Moon finally has words again to ask her questions. Selene nods, smiling.

“I am the mother of all wolves, but I am much more your mother than any other on earth. You are part of me and born of the moon.” Selene explains.

“Why?” Moon’s abrupt question doesn’t seem to phase the goddess.

“Well, that is what we need to talk about, isn’t it? I sent you to earth for a purpose. I need your help.” She looks worried and a little sad as she starts to explain. “I do not like what is happening with my children. They have forgotten that they are stronger together. They have forgotten to protect one another, and there are those that would like to see the end of them. I sent you here, Moon, to help them. I can’t interfere directly. There are rules I must follow even as a god.”

“What do you mean who wants to see wolves gone, and why can’t you just make them stop fighting?” Moon is confused. Why would a god have to follow any rules?

“I have to follow the rules of the gods. If I don’t, there would be far worse consequences for me and the world, so trust me, I would have stopped this myself, but I am not allowed to. I need you to help me. You are my child, and I am allowed to choose a champion if you will, and I chose you.

“I fear my sister Eos is the one behind what has happened with the wolves turning on each other. She has always been a little jealous. She has prayed on your stepfather’s thirst for power. I believe one of them or both are her champions now. I can not feel them the way I did before. I think they are lost to me completely.”

“Why would your sister want to end the wolves?” Colin asks, now beating Moon to the question.

“Jealousy is an evil thing and all-consuming. She wants to hurt me and knows destroying what I love is the best way to do that. We are not allowed to attack another god directly. Any bloodshed amongst ourselves is forbidden. There are so few of us left that long ago; it was ordered that we are not allowed to draw the blood of another god. It was in an effort to save ourselves, but that doesn’t stop gods from attacking and using the things we create to hurt us. I love my sister and brother dearly, but my sister has always been jealous of my relationship with our brother. She insisted she should be the one to greet him each day and ride with him in the sky. She gets angry the days I can be seen watching him and walking with him in the sky. She hates that he helps me shine brighter. She hates the love my children have for me. She wants their devotion for herself, and I believe she is working to take or destroy all I have created. She would like to take my place, feeling my role is something she should also have.

“I need you to heal the fractures she created and save my children from destroying themselves. If she continues to work through that brother of yours, Colin, he will destroy everything. His thirst for power is great, and she has used it to her full advantage. I’m sure he doesn’t know what her end goal truly is. I’m sure he thinks he will get to rule as some sort of king, but if he continues, he will be the king of nothing.”

“What can we do then?” Moon asks, concerned as she bites her lip a little, trying to think how she could possibly do anything to stop a god.

“I need you to join the packs and defeat Caleb,” Selene says simply.

“You make that sound so easy.” Moon sighs.

“Oh, I know what I’m asking you, but I believe in you and Colin. It won’t be easy to stop my sister, but if anyone can reunite the packs, you can. You do have a gift, remember.”

“Oh, and the binding spell, is that gone now?” Moon feels silly to ask.

Selene laughs a little. “It is. It should have never been placed on you at all. I missed out on our talks at night.”

“Our talks?” Moon is confused again.

“Yes, you came to talk with me every night; Kiara was bringing you to see me. Mark became worried you would be found out. I understand his concern, but I disagreed with it. Give it some time, and your memory will return, and so will Kiara’s as well. I’m afraid I have to leave you now.” Selene looks at them sadly, but when she pulls them both in, hugging them again, Moon has to laugh at Colin’s shocked expression.

“You were made for each other I know you are a good man, Colin. I would not have joined Moon with anyone less than she deserved. Remember that she will need your strength and your love. Oh, and listen to Farrell more, will you?” Selene smiles again and kisses them each on the cheek like a mother leaving her children.

When she is gone from sight, Colin looks down at Moon. “So now we have to defeat a Goddess and stop my brother from doing her bidding.”

“Just add it to the list.” Moon shrugs her mind still racing with so many more questions.
