Chapter 32

Change of Favor

Moon is whisked off into a room, and they start putting heated blankets on her. Someone in scrubs comes to talk to Colin and asks what happened. Colin shifts looking over his shoulder at David, still standing in earshot. Colin walks into the room with them closing the door, and the nurse looks at him strangely. Colin goes straight for the Doctor examining her. He looks up at Colin expectantly. If Colin had to guess, he was fresh out of medical school.

Colin’s gaze moves to Moon lying in bed, and if it wasn’t for the fact that her lips were still tinted blue, she seems to be merely sleeping. Colin takes a breath hating that he has to tell the Doctor that she is what she is. Colin suddenly has a better understanding of the pain Alpha Mark must have faced.

“I need to know what I tell you stays in this room.” Colin glances back to the door. The young Doctor gives him an exasperated look. So, Colin still not feeling good about the decision continues. “She is having a hard time reaching her wolf and shifting normally. I don’t know why but I think it was done to her to protect her. She shifted only halfway but it was more than she had done before. She is a white wolf.”

When the Doctor rolls his eyes, Colin has to stop himself from punching the man. “I know how that sounds, but it’s true. When she did stop the shift, she passed out and was freaking glowing. I know how this sounds, but you can ask my guys. They will tell you the same thing. How is she? Why won’t she wake up?” Colin moves closer and brushes her hair from her face.

“That I don’t know.” The Doctor says, looking at the heart monitor Moon is hooked up to. It has been beeping steadily, and Colin finds himself breathing to the beeps.

“If she wasn’t so cold and would wake, I would say she is just sleeping. I want to get some scans of her head, but she is stable, and we may just have to see what happens if what you tell me is true then.” The young Doctor shrugs with an incredulous tone, and Colin growls as Farrell pushes forward.

“I don’t fucking care if you believe me, but you better do everything you can for her. I will see to you personally if anything happens to her while she is here.” Colin orders in complete Alpha dominance. He’s done playing nice with this moron.

The room goes quiet, all but the beeping. The young Doctor looks like he might pee himself, and his smug demeanor is gone in an instant.

“Of course, Alpha.” The man manages to stammer out. “We are doing all we possibly can.”

“Good!” Colin looks down at Moon again, hoping that, at any moment, her eyes will flutter open and look up at him.

Chris links him, telling him David would like to speak with him and Colin closes his eyes, breathing out slowly.

“I have to go and speak with your Alpha. Keep me informed of any changes.” He orders, and the room of people nods in unison as he turns to leave the room. In the lobby, he finds Chris and David sitting in small blue chairs. The large men look like they are sitting in children’s chairs, and as he approaches them, they stand to meet him.

“How is she?” David asks, still looking at Colin like he knows he is hiding something.

“They don’t know why she won’t wake. They want to do some scans, but I think if she can be moved, then we should just take her back to our pack,” Colin says, looking at Chris, who nods in agreement.

“So, what is your interest in her then? She can’t be your mate, is she?” David is still pressing for information, and Colin is beginning to clench his jaw in aggravation. He thinks about lying to David, but that feels unnecessary. Caleb knows Moon is his mate but is it better to confirm it to David or just deny it? Colin is weighing the options when Chris interjects.

“Colin, I hate to interrupt, but we have problems. Caleb used David’s lands to hide you and try and abduct you. He clearly knew what Jamie had planned and went along with it willingly. Alpha David, what are your feelings on this? Clearly, you knew nothing of Caleb or Jamie’s plans.” Chris is polite and kind, questioning David but the accusation in his tone is there.

It’s subdued enough that it sounds like innocent enough questions. Chris has quite the knack for saying something or asking something in just the right way to make people feel like they need to answer him or want to. Colin just demands it from people.

“Of course, I didn’t know anything about what that buffoon had planned. I met him in the Academy when I met you. He was an idiot then, and he’s an idiot now.”

Colin rolls his eyes still clenching his jaw. He had hoped Jamie would turn out better. Jamie had been sent to school by his father. Jamie’s family couldn’t think of anything else to do with him. He was acting out so badly. At first, Jamie took to Colin and was happy to listen to him. Colin had hoped Jamie would grow up a bit more and apply himself so Colin could promote him, but Jamie only got worse once Colin had his own pack. He invited Jamie, and at first, he was fine, but soon he made friends that looked up to him, and it went to Jamie’s head quickly. It was downhill from there, and Colin couldn’t bring him around.

Colin had met Chris at the Academy along with David. It is common for high-ranking pack members to send their children to learn at the Military Academy. Most serve the military before returning to their packs as better warriors and leaders.

Colin didn’t return to the Academy after his mother died. He was accused of what happened to his sister. The only reason Colin wasn’t killed by Maddox is they couldn’t find her body. Caleb suggested the banishment would be better. They could lie and say he left willingly rather than mar the good name of Maddox by having a son like Colin.

Caleb has convinced many of the packs to avoid Colin, saying he is ruthless and will betray alliances. Colin had been happy to learn the Big Springs pack wanted to work with him, not his brother. Colin had found a few packs that didn’t believe Caleb, but not many. Colin knows that soon rumors will start to circulate about him, and how evil he is. Colin is sure Caleb will turn this whole thing around before Colin can get ahead of it. Colin has never been able to figure out why Caleb just didn’t let him die that day. Why keep him around? Was it only for Caleb’s amusement that Colin was allowed a life? What is his goal?

“David, do you think you would be willing to share what transpired here today on your land without your permission?” Colin is grasping for straws.

“While I believe you and what you are telling me about Jamie. I only saw you and your people on my land.” David says, looking Colin square in the eyes. “I don’t think I’m willing to risk my pack on your word. Caleb Maddox is not the Alpha to cross.”

“Funny, I thought that was me?” Colin remarks callously.

“He would really love people to believe that, but I think things are changing.” He cocks an eyebrow at Colin knowingly.

Things might be changing; perhaps his brother is losing favor with the other packs. Maybe people are seeing Caleb for what he is. Colin can only hope that is true.
