Chapter 7

Dear Diary 10/13/15

The torture still continues, its been 3 weeks since that dreadful day but I’ve learned my mistake but he says there is more to the lesson then what meets my small mind. What could the lesson possibly be? That he could get away with injecting me with a weird serum that is supposedly going to make me change? One the bright side of things Trina and I have began to grow closer as friends, she even gave me this diary to write down my time in here but she said to keep it hidden from Dr. Edwin or otherwise he would know my every thought. Today is my birthday, happy me! (note the sarcasm here.) I wonder about how Dr. Edwin is going to ‘celebrate’ my tremendous day, maybe he’ll let me have a day off from this continuous torture or cutting open my insides to make a soup.

“Irisa?” A soft mutter snaps me out of my journal as I slam the book down. Trina pops out from behind the door and slowly shuts it. “You scared me” My voice comes out in huffs as I calm my heart down to its regular beats. “Sorry Ria.” Trina’s voices comes out in a whisper, she raises her hand slightly and gestures me to come near the door. Slowly raising out of bed towards her as quietly as possible. “What’s going on? Its 2:15 in the morning.” I manage to breath out gently, Trina reaches for the lights and switches them off. Why is she doing? “I’m going to bring you outside Ria but you have to be quiet.” Outside? She is helping me escape? “You’re helping me to escape?” I met her eyes and saw sorrow shine through and in my heart I knew that I wasn’t leaving tonight. “No, I’m sorry. Even if you did manage to get out then how will you explain a reason of breaking out? There is no evidence to the torture he does, therefore you will just be brought back and tortured more.” Trina’s voice truly broke my heart. The way sadness drips with her words is crippling. “Did you try to escape before?” I whisper silently. Her hand wraps around my wrist hastily and moves my body out of the windows path. “Yes, and I don’t want to try it again.” As soon as she opens the door, I knew this was going to be a life-changing night.

The hall is eerily empty, the lights flickering softly and the hum of the heaters is all that could be heard. “Stay quiet and we will make it outside.” The whisper sent chills up my spine letting the anxiety of this place fill my heart. The pounding of my heart begins to fill the my ears but as my heart begins to speed up a new sensationing arises. This surging energy flowing through my body, filling my body with energy. A rush of pain pulses through my head forcing my eyes to slam shut. My footing gets wobbly as Trina drags me down the hallway. I slowly open my eyes looking at the world around, the hall is suddenly light blue. I quickly glance at my hand to see that my veins are glowing bright blue as well and my skin resembles the room around me. I’m seeing the world as blue, what’s wrong with me? The energy that resides in me begins to move at a more hastily pace. “We are almost there.” Trina’s voice rings through my ears causing a piercing ringing to erupt into my ears. A sudden breeze hits my skin as my vision finds its place once again, moving my eyes around the setting I’m in. I’m outside, the dirt fills in between my toes. The trees that surround me are tall and leaves blow through the air, the cold crisp night makes my skin come alive.

“You didn’t think I would forget your birthday, did you?” Trina’s voice breaks the welcomed silence. “I almost did myself, I wouldn’t have blamed you. You’ve only known me for about 3 months now.” My voice comes out in a louder volume than I wanted to but it was still pleasant. The parking lot was empty, clear of any visiting families and friends. A single bench was under a tree, covered in moss and leaves. Strolling over to the bench, not caring if I’d be covered in moss or dirt. I slowly sit on the bench letting the moment take over. Who knows when I will get out of this place, Katrina could have been here for months or years now. Is my fate to die at the hands of Edwin? “You okay? I thought this would make you happy.” Trina’s voice cracks lightly, breaking my thought. I nod my head slowly trying to contain these emotions that are taking over, allowing that foreign surge of energy to come back. Waves begin to pulse through my body as this electricity begins to spark off my skin. Trina’s eyes bulge out of her head watching the electricity spark faster of my skin, her feet begin to shuffle backwards towards the door of the asylum. My vision shifts to the blue filter as the energy swirls into my heart, my lungs draining of oxygen. My eyes start to roll into the back of my head, bring me into darkness.

My body is numb for reasons unknown to me, but I can’t feel, hear, smell, or see anything. Just darkness and disconnection from the world. Am I dead? Was this my life? Happy at first and ends in hell? I don’t want this, I don’t want this to be who I am or was. This is not how I am ending, I refuse. My eyes shot open and my senses return hastily. The sky above me is a starry black, I grip my hands to connect to my surroundings but grass slips through my fingers. What happened? My memories flash over me in a wave of panic, I fainted. I think I fainted, but I don’t know. “Ria.” Katrina’s voice snaps me out of my confused state. I quickly move my shake legs into a weakly standing position, breathing out in a shaking manner. “Trina, what happened? Did I faint?” My voice has clear volume of my weak state. Trina rushes to my side aiding me to the tree, allowing me to settle using the tree as support. “You fainted after you-” Trina’s eyes begin to fill with confusion, as much as my mind is filled with. “Exploded.” My ears barely grasps onto her word, I exploded? “What the hell are you talking about Trina? Humans don’t explode.” I can sense my body beginning to panic, how did I explode? Did I yell at her, was it from those sparks? “I think I’m going crazy Katrina. Before I fainted, there were sparks coming off my skin. This electricity that started to flow through me, like it was apart of me. I think I’ve gone crazy.” The energy surge starts to pump from my heart, giving my body back the energy I’ve had before coming outside. Trina’s hands are gently stroke my cheeks, her eyes full of sadness but her touch calms me. “You are not crazy Irisa. You’re not crazy, I can promise you that. If you are crazy than what am I? I was the one to see this electricity fly off of you. This place changes people, makes them new but I don’t think anyone could say better.” Her voice is calming, allowing this energy to cease from existence. “Let’s go back inside before anyone realises we are gone.” I manage to say with a yawn erupting from my chest. Trina’s head moves into a nodding motion before leading me back through the door.

We manage to make it back to my room without being spotted by the hallways ‘guards’. Trina helps me back into bed before she starts to head towards the door. I let my eyes flutter shut but my mind couldn’t shut off, how could I do what I did? This electricity resides inside me, is it from the torture? The way that Edwin uses electricity to torture me for ‘problems I’ve caused for myself.’ A hand swiftly wraps around my arms jolting me out of bed. “Sorry Ria.” Trina’s voice whispers gently in my ear. I place my hand on my chest trying to calm my heart, sensinging a tiny surge of energy flow to my fingertips. “Don’t do that.” I whisper softly sitting up in my bed, my hands a bit shaky. You seem nervous Ria, do I make you nervous?” Trina’s voice is laced with humor but holds a hidden tone that’s unrecognizable to my ears. A giggle erupts from my throat startling me, how did I manage to make that noise? “No, you don’t make me nervous Trina. You just scared me, I was trying to sleep.” A yawn slowly rises out of my mouth causing Trina to burst into laughter. “You are special Irisa, special indeed.” I nod my head before yawning again. “There was a nurse in the hallway, so I couldn’t leave.” Trina bumps my hip causing me to move against the wall, She hastily moves the blanket and climbs into my bed. “What are you doing Trina? Aren’t you supposed to go back to your room?” Whispering softly as I pull the extra blanket up that’s at the edge of my bed up to my chest. “Yeah, but who knows when the lady will leave the hall. The shift change is at 6:32, I have exactly 3 minutes to get to my room from here and my room is two halls away. I have nothing to worry about, now we can either go to sleep or we can talk.” I shift in my seat to give Trina more room on the bed to relax. “Talk about what? The weather? How dogs smell diseases? The way electricity is somehow coursing through my veins?” I project my voice to show sarcasm causing Trina to erupt in laughter. Her laugh is memorizing, full of joy and mirth filling my heart with happiness. “Let’s talk about everything.”
